Driving the Coast - Day 6 South Beach State Park to Sunset Bay

Another day heading south. Day 6 was mostly cloudy and foggy, but it didn't rain at all. We didn't really have anything specific planned for the day so we were able to slowly make our way down the coast and stop when we felt like it.

Foggy Morning.

We lucked out and happened upon this trail from one of the pullouts we stopped at. It lead all the way back to the Cape Perpetua Visitors Center.

The trail lead down to the rocks. One of the features of this area was Spouting Horn, a natural rock formation which when a wave hit the right way would shoot spray up in the air.

We went down on the rocks, but couldn't go too far, the tide was fairly high and I think it was still comming in at this point.

P9252155.jpg

It would have been really cool to be here during low tide when we could have explored the tide pools.

Heceta Head Lighthouse. This is apparently the most photographed Lighthouse, it's the one that shows up in all the calendars.

View from the Heceta Head Lighthouse. We stopped at a pullout along these cliffs, there's supposed to be a great view of the Lighthouse (where the Calendar shots are taken from) but it was way too foggy. We couldn't even see it.

We hiked down to the beach and back. It was about 2 miles in total, but the sand made it feel like much more.

Driving the Coast - Day 5 Cannon Beach to South Beach State Park

We really liked Cannon Beach but had to move on. Though, I don't think either of us were that enthusiastic about sleeping in a tent again after the luxury of the motel.

We had to stop at Tillamook Cheese factory to have a look around and sample the cheese and ice cream of course.

Driving the Coast - Day 4 Cannon Beach

We really liked Cannon beach and our motel. So much that we ended up staying an extra night. That meant we had a full day in Cannon beach. It worked out really well because it rained for a good part of the day as well as the night, it was much nicer to be in a motel then a tent for that.

These are the motels on the other side of the street. Ours was basically the same construction.

We didn't want to just sit around all day so we drove a few miles south where there was about a 9-10 km hike out to a point.

This section was really slick. It wasn't dangerous but we really didn't want to fall in the mud.

We came back a slightly different way which took us through the day use area. It was a really nice spot.

Driving the Coast - Day 3 Grayland Beach to Cannon Beach

The Grayland Beach campsite was such a nice spot. We made some hot coffee in the morning and hung out at the beach for a while before packing up and heading out on the road again.

Not bad for 20 steps from the campsite.

Back on the road, we drove through Southbend a beautiful little down, this is the Courthouse.

P9221773.jpg

Seaside, this was probably the most touristy feeling place of the whole trip. We stayed for a bit, picked up some salt water taffy and continued on.

Cannon Beach! We stayed at The waves motel which is right on the beach with great views.

Campfire! I think the only time I used my tripod the entire trip.

Driving the Coast Day 2 - Hall of Mosses

One of the side trips on our way through the Olympic Peninsula was to the Hall of Mosses in the Olympic National Park. It's a 0.8 mile loop trail. It was neat, but since we've both grown up in the Vancouver area which is basically a Temperate Rain Forrest we've seen a lot of moss before. The photos turned out quite well though.

This was my favourite section of the trail, a 200 foot side path to a grove of maple trees covered with moss.
